John Whitfield of Goathill in the parish of Wetheral, guilty of the murder of William Cockburn, by shooting him, I th ehigh road near Armathwaite in the parish of Hesket in the Forest on 8th May 1769 - wounding him in the thigh so he died on 13th May.

In the Quarter Sessions papers it is stated he was in prison “from Tuesday, (1st August) the day he received sentence to the Wednesday week following when he was executed.”
